Why forgotten Light Gun arcade games deserve to be ported to PC
Arcades are difficult to access these days, especially in the United States. Perhaps it is high time for well-known small arms titles to enter the home on PC.
Arcades have always had fun and interesting titles that never come out much outside of arcades. Perhaps the most striking example is small arms games. They can see a release outside of the arcades as derivative titles, but don’t tend to get a lot of ports. With the current climate of the world making it more difficult to visit arcades, maybe it’s time to bring these classic small arms titles to a platform like PC so they can still be enjoyed and experienced without having to put themselves in danger to do so.
Obviously, there are several hurdles to this, including the fact that traditional small arms technology is not necessarily compatible with newer HDTVs, just like the problem with the NES Zapper. The options for taking them out of the arches are slim, which means the PC might be the best (if not the only) option for home ports. Games like house of death or the Rambo The arcade title would make a lot of money if released on a larger scale, and the PC is perfect for reaching a large number of players and making sure nothing is left behind. There is another great thing that PC ports would do, which would gain a whole new audience.
Although they have been in the arcades for years, there are still dozens of players who have never experienced any of the classic small arms games. These titles have a long history, and bringing them to PC would not only allow the legacy they hold to continue while also providing an opportunity to revamp them, extending their legacy to a new generation. Being in the arcades doesn’t go any further, but it has made these games a huge success. However, the current global crisis coupled with fewer arcades means it is even harder to experience them than before. It also has the potential to create new experiences.
Often times, small arms games have a station where players sit or stand with a plastic gun to shoot enemies on the screen. Some, like Crisis of time, feature innovative mechanics such as the ability to take cover, which is done via a physical pedal that players would step on near the machine. While it might seem like the work of small arms games wouldn’t be conducive to a platform like the PC, in reality, this is one of the best platforms they could be brought to. Mechanisms like the cover mechanism or the offscreen shot to reload would seem difficult to implement, but a push of a button could override those functions and keep everything intact on PC.
Of course, the games are not dead yet. Companies like SEGA continue to create new titles in their small arms series. House of the dead 4 got an arcade release, but it also received a small version on PS3, which used the PlayStation Move to replicate the small arms experience. This particular game was released on an arcade engine very close to what PC offers, meaning it could very well be released on PC with minimal effort. The limited means to play these games only hurts them in the long run, as many will never be able to experience them like people did when arcades were more prevalent.
Arcade-only versions for these games may have worked when arcades were everywhere and easy to access, but now this version structure only serves to hamper the player base, so fewer people end up getting them. play or even view them outside of online videos. Not only are the controls easy enough to translate on PC, but it gives them the best chance of being worn faithfully and looking great. Their legacies would continue for even longer if this idea came true, and more people could experience it than ever before. It’s clear why these small arms games have to make their way to the PC.
