Statement by President Coughlin on the Assembly’s Passage of Firearms Safety Legislation

(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin (D-Middlesex) issued the following statement expressing the Assembly’s commitment to adopt the gun safety package following a vote on three of the drafts law during the Monday session:

“The General Assembly was fully prepared to take the comprehensive gun violence prevention agenda forward at today’s session. I am sure we have the votes in our caucus to do so. As we work to build consensus, we hope the Senate will join us in the fight to make New Jersey families safer by moving this important package forward.

“In the meantime, we are passing bills that have the support of both legislative chambers. These bills mark a significant step forward. We’re balancing student mental health with preparation for the worst-case scenario, preparation that proved to be life-saving for students in Oxford, Mich. Earlier this month. We have also taken steps to address the loopholes that have allowed out-of-state firearms to bypass our state’s strong safety protections and regulations. “

“Our goal is to continue to lead the nation on fair and strong common sense gun safety laws. I plan to consider releasing a full package again in January and hope to get them to the governor’s office soon. The people of every community in New Jersey deserve nothing less than to feel safe.

“Public safety is our top priority. “
