This raises new questions about what it means to be a responsible gun owner.

“It’s heartbreaking. Prayers to all the families and friends who have been touched by this, ”said Spencer Johnson.

Johnson works with Firearms Legal Protection in Livonia.

“I think if parents could have locked these guns down and made them less easily accessible, this could have been avoided,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the gun safety rules are straightforward.

“A minor should never have a firearm in their possession without the presence of an adult. I think the biggest mistake made here was that parents had this gun too readily available, ”Johnson said.

Johnson said parents and adults should have a conversation with their children about guns.

“Have this conversation with your miners. Sit down, talk to them, tell them if you have a gun don’t touch it unless you’re around. Never put your finger on the trigger. Never handle a firearm unless you are under adult supervision, ”Johnson said.

Johnson said another safety rule is simple, but very important. Lock your weapon.
