Doctor Who, new Dalek pistol design revealed for New Years special

Another New Years Day, another special Doctor Who with the Daleks involved – but the new Daleks Eve seems to make some changes to the Doctor’s biggest enemies after the previous January 1 invasions, Dalek Resolve and Revolution.

On the one hand, this time around, the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) will actually be exterminated by them – but only temporarily, thanks to a constantly reset timeline (like Groundhog Day) that keeps the TARDIS team trapped in a self-storage facility. .

But the Daleks themselves have also undergone a subtle overhaul that sets them apart from the versions we’ve seen before. And while it’s not as extreme as the man-made Black Daleks made for last year’s New Years Special, it’s still an interesting development of the classic monster design.

First, however, the elephant in the room – there is still no sink plunger. Yes, it looks like Dalek’s classic “manipulator arm” has been retired for the time being, with the iconic sucker carefully blended out of the scene during the Jodie Whittaker / Chris Chibnall era. In fact, he didn’t appear once during Chibnall’s time.

In Resolution, it made sense because this Dalek had recreated itself from junk and old technology. In Revolution of the Daleks, the Black Daleks were based on this conception of Resolution, while the “correct” Bronze Daleks who arrived later in the episode were from a special “Death Squad”, which may explain their lack of piston.

Now, however, Eve of the Daleks seems to confirm that the Piston is gone for good – unless, of course, those particular Daleks are special in some other way. Based on their main overhaul point, they just might be.

Because the really interesting change in these Daleks doesn’t come from their claw, but from their weapon. As seen in the festive special trailer (and above), these particular Daleks replaced the traditional egg whip-shaped weapon with some sort of rapid-fire pistol, allowing them to fire more shots. energy faster.

In this minor overhaul, the new pistol looks like a sort of machine gun attachment to the end of the traditional Dalek weapon, with several “barrels” rotated on an axis to facilitate rapid fire. It’s quite different from the normal pistol, as you can see in this photo from the January 2021 New Years special.

Why these particular Daleks have this new attachment is unclear. Are they another type of specialized Dalek like the Death Squad or the Recon Daleks? Is this a new default design for the Daleks that Chris Chibnall has decided to introduce? And does this slight alteration relate in any way to the storyline of the Eve of the Daleks time loop?

For now, the answers to these questions remain elusive. Still, it’s good to know that the Daleks are back – and when they do return, they’ll all be armed.
